Fireworks are a popular feature of many celebrations, especially during the summer season or over the Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve period. However, they can be dangerous if not handled properly. The UK government has set out rules and regulations to ensure the safe use of fireworks.
Here are some of the main rules for safely using fireworks in the UK:
Age Restrictions
You must be 18 or over to buy fireworks or possess them in a public place. It is also illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under the age of 18.
Time Restrictions
Fireworks can be used anytime throughout the year from 7am – 11pm. There are however specific times of the year when this time is specifically extended. These are:
- Bonfire Night (5 November) – fireworks can be used between 7 am and 1am 6th November.
- New Year’s Eve – fireworks can be used until 1 am on 1st January
- Diwali – fireworks can be used between 7 am and 1am the next day.
- Chinese New Year - fireworks can be used between 7 am and 1am the next day.
It is also important to note that local councils can apply different rules regarding the times of the day fireworks can be used in their area. It is always best to check with your local council before setting off fireworks.
Safety Rules
Fireworks can be dangerous if not handled properly. To ensure safety, the following rules should be followed:
- Always follow the instructions on the fireworks packaging
- Do not drink alcohol before setting off fireworks
- Only light fireworks one at a time
- Stand back from the fireworks once they have been lit
- Keep fireworks in a closed metal box
- Never go back to a lit firework
- Always supervise children when they are using sparkeler fireworks
- Keep pets indoors when fireworks are being use
Penalties for Breaking the Rules
If you break any of the rules for using fireworks, you could be fined up to £5,000 or imprisoned for up to 6 months. It is also illegal to set off fireworks in a public place without a specific licence.
